The first part of this timeline can be found here. Below you will find the major events leading up to the campaign start date, starting with the years immediately after the Helfay. You may want to start with Part 1 if you haven’t already read it to help put things into perspective.
2 AH, Coming of the Dwarves. The dwarves begin to emerge from the mines and camps where they were kept for hundreds of years by the elves. They reunite with the humans and trolls in Loaerth City, and share with them coalcrafting technology—but keep tight control of who learns the secrets of coalcraft.
3 AH, Exodus. Believing the world has been cleansed of the elves, the humans begin to leave Loaerth City to explore the world they once called their own. Pioneers find the world an empty shell.Widespread destruction from the Helfay has spared some regions completely, but even those are devoid of the Fey. In the coming years, the search for more dwarven coal becomes the main drive for exploration of the Known World.
5 AH, War in the Feywyrd. Fractured by being refugees in the Feywyrd, the returned elves find no warm welcome from the elves and Fey who remained behind. The deposed elven god, Lucien Tinuvar, powerless without followers in the Known World, begins to fade into the Void. The Feywyrd is torn apart again by infighting and war.
10 AH, The Condemnation of Man. After a decade of being cut off from their gods, the religious elite in Loaerth declare that the end of the world is upon them. Several high clergy convince the king that the races of Man should be punished for the death of the gods. The king condemns the study of magic and imprisons the entire faculty of the College of Traditions. The Historical Society of Man is disbanded. Anyone suspected of studying magic or the Helfay is imprisoned. The Archivist escapes and, with the help of dwarven coalcraft engineers, seals the Tower of Loaerth.
11AH – 33AH. War in Loaerth City. Religious factions clash with government forces. Eventually, the economic system in Loaerth City breaks down. Widespread famine and disease ravage the city and threaten to destroy the last bastion of humanity in the world. Several groups claim to be at once in control of Loaerth City, but the King maintains control of central districts and is protected by the religious elite. Many citizens flee into the Unclaimed Frontier, but find themselves in a world left vacant in the wake of the Helfay. Haz’Beukar founds Beukalazand on the outskirts of Loaerth City. Called the “Troll Ghetto” by humans, the small enclave is walled off to all non-trolls, and Haz’Beukar is later crowned Troll-King by his people.
33 AH. Power Change. The King is killed in a coup led by the Archivist. The prince is reinstated as King, but the political power of his position is severely restricted. The King becomes the military commander-in-chief, but holds now administrative powers over the people of Loaerth. The Archivist, and the elected Warden’s Council become the ruling organization of Loaerth City. The Historical Society of Man is reinstated, and the College of Traditions is reopened.
34 AH. Beukarlazand Opens. Haz’Beukar opens Beukarlazand to visitors and the humans discover a lush garden of delights within.
44 AH. The Archivist Dies. The ruling Archivist, Eurig Talfrun, the man who caused the Helfay, dies at the age of 89. His successor is chosen by the Electoral College of Scholars.
45 AH. Felix Sundown Discovered. The Tower of Loaerth is opened from within by the last living Fey creature in the Known World: Felix Sundown, a feytroll. He was locked within the confines of the Tower for 46 years and during that time mastered much of the knowledge contained within its walls.
102 AH. Felix Sundown Orchestrates the Coal Accords. After having tight control over the teaching and development of coalcrafting, the dwarven lord Cirus MacMaster finally agrees to share the knowledge of coalcrafting with the other races of Loaerth. The first scholar of coalcrafting is appointed to the College of Traditions and begins teaching coalcrafting to humans for the first time.
120 AH. Felix Sundown Dies. After living for several hundred years, Felix Sundown dies of old age in the D. X. Mullen Library while transcribing an ancient dwarven tablet.
150 AH, Malachrome Discovered: A strange metal that has the characteristics of nerves is discovered that, when combined with coalcraft, provides the basis for the first automatons.
153 AH, Airships: The first airships take flight over Loaerth City.
201 AH. Malachrome Guard Dogs Protect the King. An assassination attempt on the king by a rogue political faction is thwarted by automaton guard dogs. The use of malachrome-infused devices becomes even more popular.
543 AH, The Island & Prison: In a strange windstorm, a merchant ship is blown far off course and discovers the Island some hundreds of miles off the coast of Loaerth. Capt. Sheldon MacTaverck investigates and finds it full of magical and fantastic creatures. Bixby Quartertail acts as guide to the newly arrived humans. A strange shadow begins forming in the skies to the west of Loaerth. Within a few weeks, it solidifies into the long-lost Prison. Captain MacTaverck is a few days away from the Veil’s outermost surface by this point.
544 AH, Feywyrd and The Veil: Continuing to sail westward, Capt. MacTaverck and his crew pierce the Veil and “discover” the Feywyrd. The elves they meet greet them with open arms and ask them to lead them back to the Island, which they claim is their lost homeland. For many weeks, the elves treat the humans and Bixby Quartertail as welcomed dignitaries, showering them with gifts and feasts. Back in the Known World there are widespread reports that malachrome-infused devices begin to malfunction; rumors spread of malachrome automatons exhibiting lifelike behaviors.
545 AH, The Elves Return: Elven lords, and their factions, follow MacTaverck over sea and pass through the Veil. They return to the Island and replenish their supplies before the long sea voyage over the great ocean to the mainland of the Known World. Their passage through the Veil and onto the Island also brings the flow of magic back into the world. People in the mainland begin reporting seeing strange things in the wilderness, old magics and traditions from the Dead Gods begin to have potency again. The world begins to change back to how it was before the Helfay. The Island, once a land of forgetfullness to banished Hodolu fairies, becomes a way station for an influx of Hodolu from the Feywyrd into the Known World.
545 – 547 AH, Lost at Sea: Capt. MacTaverck, Bixby, the elves and their crews are lost at sea. What seem like mere months for the sailors were, in reality, many years. As on the Island, time passes strangely at the border between Loaerth and the Feywyrd.
547 AH, Return to Loaerth: Capt. MacTaverck, after having been lost at sea for years, returns to Loaerth with fantastic tales of strange beasts, elves, and magic. He is accompanied by Bixby Quartertail and a contingent of elven diplomats who are allowed to set up an enclave in Loaerth City. By now, several old religions have renewed their faiths and are begining to make connections with the gods they have been separated from for so long. Bixby is treated as a hero to the many Fey creatures living now in Loaerth.
549 AH, The Myrmidons Pass Through The Veil: A small hive of myrmidons from the Feywyrd find the Island and, passing over it, continue on to discover the Known World. Prince Lazlo is murdered by Bixby Quartertail, his body taken over and used in a failed assassination attempt on the King of Loaerth. By midsummer’s end, the myrmidons attack Loaerth City and are destroyed, though a few escape. By year’s end, sightings of myrmidons in the waters south of Loaerth City bring fears that a colony has emerged and is taking root in the Known World.
550 AH, The Story Begins: Magic, having only been recently rediscovered is mainly the purview of the Fey. With coalcraft technology behind them the humans and dwarves have only begun to explore the Island. Capt. MacTaverick goes missing and rumored to have been kidnapped by elven spies. A second wave of Hodolu creatures come to Loaerth City, but are not generally welcomed by any save for the peaceful trolls. Bixby Quartertail is rumored to be hiding somewhere on the Island.
